Dr. Olawoyin worked in the petroleum industry as a geologist, geophysicist, and environmental scientist both in the upstream and downstream sectors. His research interests emphasize on Human Health Exposure Risk Assessment, NanoEHS, Global Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Statistical Techniques in Health and Safety Engineering, Hazard Management in Nuclear Safety, Cognitive and Environmental Ergonomics, Hazard Management and Systems Safety, Occupational Decision-Making Aspects of Safety and Health, Numerical Techniques in Behavioral-Base Safety, Resource control and Safety Intervention Methods.
He also has continued research interest in optimizing natural gas production from tight formations, specifically on shale and sandstone formations. Awards and Honors include Society of Mining Engineers (WAIMME 2012): Excellence scholarship award, Africana Research Institute (ARC), Penn. State: 2012 Research Grant Recipient, He holds a B.S. honors degree in Geology with a thesis titled “Applications of Gravity and Magnetics in Basement Modeling” and “Aeromagnetic Interpretation of the Oban-massif, SE- Nigeria” from the University of Calabar. M.S. degree was in Petroleum and Natural-Gas Engineering (thesis titled “Natural-Gas Developments in the Marcellus Shale” and other projects including “The Hydrogeologic Environment and Critical Zone of the Spring Creek Watershed” and “Interpretation of Fractures using microseismic”) from the Pennsylvania State University.
He also holds a doctoral degree in Energy and Mineral Engineering (dissertation titled “Application of Expert Systems in the Characterization and Impact of Petroleum Derivatives on Human Health” also from the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Olawoyin is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG Associate), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG Associate), National Association of Petroleum Explorationist (NAPE), Nigerian Mining & Geosciences Society (NMGS), American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), National Safety Council (NSC). Richard is certified by the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professional as a Certified Environmental Professional, he is also certified by the National Registry of Environmental Professionals (NREP) as a Certified Environmental and Safety Compliance Officer (CESCO).
He has written over 12 publications (8 as first author) on; Energy and Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Environment, Health and Safety, Drilling Innovation and Environmental Health Sciences. He has presented at several international conferences on petroleum technology, environmental-health, safety, and geoscience.
